Former N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice James G. Exum Jr. will chair the Senior Lawyers Division in 2014-15. He has served of counsel with Smith Moore Leatherwood in Greensboro since Jan. 1, 1996.

Jim Exum is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a Morehead Scholar, New York University School of Law, and the Institute of Judicial Administration, NYU School of Law, Senior Appellate Judge's Seminar.

He was honored by the NCBA's Constitutional Rights and Responsibilities Section in 2009 as the recipient of the John McNeill Smith, Jr. Award. He served as a vice president on the NCBA Board of Governors in 1979-80.

Exum practiced with Smith Moore Leatherwood's predecessor, Smith Moore Smith Schell & Hunter, from 1961-67. He served in the General Assembly in 1967 prior to his appointment to the N.C. Superior Court, where he served as a resident judge until 1974.

Exum served as an associate justice on the N.C. Supreme Court from 1974-86 and as chief justice form 1986-94. He served as general counsel for the General Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1998-2001 and as an adjunct faculty member with the Duke University School of Law in 1995-96.
